Our Local Area - Bundoran, Co Donegal
TurfnSurf is located in the heart of Bundoran town, which is situated in the south west of county Donegal. Bundoran is the Surf Capital of Ireland and is located on a part of the Wild Atlantic Way which has some of the best surf in Ireland. In the right conditions it even has the best surf in the world!
Bundoran hugs the north-west coast, over-looking Donegal Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The town has been a seaside resort for a long time – since the late 1770s. TurfnSurf is located in one of the oldest buildings in the town – number 6 Bayview Terrace, which dates from the 1890s.
Surf Breaks and Locations in Bundoran
Bundoran is well known for many things but we love it most for being the best surfing town in Ireland (maybe even the world). Here is a run through of some of the world class reef and beach breaks located just on our doorstep.
1. The Peak
An iconic world famous reef break. Barrelling left and right A-frame. Best at low tide but can work at high tide. For the experienced surfer only.
2. Inside Left
Very hollow left hander reef break, that works at low tide. For the experienced surfer only.
Perfect for experienced body boarders or very brave surfers. Very shallow wave breaking over rocks.
4. Main Beach
Watch the RIP on the right hand side of hte beach near Rougey Rocks. Best at high tide and the only place to hold a wave in strong on shore winds.
5. Tullan Strand
Best at low tide and the only place to catch a wave when everywhere else is flat. But be careful if The Peak or other reef breaks are working Tullan will be a washin machine wipe out and dangerous. Good for beginners in small surf and more experienced surfers can tuck in at the cliff.
6. Pampa (PMPA)
Only for the Brave!!! A barrelling slab wave breaking over rock. Works at high tide.
7, 8 & 9. Black spot, River Mouth and T-Right
Black spot is a left and right reef break that works at low and high tide. Body boarder heaven and only for the experienced surfer.
River Mouth A mellow right hander works at high tide.
T-Right Barrelling right hander that breaks over boulders. High tid. Only for the very experienced surfer. T-left is the same but going the opposite direction.

Things to do in Bundoran - apart from Surfing!
There is lots to do and see in Bundoran. Obviously there is surfing, stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), sea kayaking and blo-karting with TurfnSurf! But here are a few more things to do…
Coastal Walks – Rougey & West-end
We are lucky in Bundoran to have a view of the sea 365 days a year. Take one of the great coastal walks along Rougey Cliffs or along the West End and look upon the panoramic views of Donegal Bay. You can go for just 10 minutes or 2 hours but they will not fail to impress.
You will see Slieve League Cliffs on the other side of the bay. Supposedly the highest sea cliffs in Europe! Look west and you can see Mullaghmore headland, the home of Classie Bawn Castle. Turn north and look upon the Bluestack Mountains stretching along behind Donegal Town.
We get some of our best sunset photos simply by taking a stroll along Rougey Cliffs, bring your camera.
Music, Bars and Nightclubs
There is a whole range of bars, live music events and nightclubs in Bundoran. These are some of our favourites.
Brennan’s Criterion Bar
Sisters Nan and Pat have been running Brennan’s Criterion Bar (to give it the full name) for more years than they care to remember. Forget the pastiche, pretend old bars of Dublin’s Temple Bar, this bar is truly an authentic, old fashioned Irish bar. The walls, ceilings chairs and bar counter are original, old and well kept. Perhaps the best pint of Guinness in town, it’s the place for long conversations and mellow evenings with friends.
Madden’s Old Bridge Bar
This is the unofficial surfer’s bar in Bundoran. Run by the Madden family it’s a great place for delicious bar food and a drink. They’ve a whole range of craft beers including beers from the Donegal Brewing Company, located only 10km down the road. There’s weekly traditional music sessions in Madden’s Bar along with other music events. Call in and ask them what’s going on.
The Chasin’ Bull
The Doherty family have been at the helm of this bar known locally as “The Bull”. They offer lots of live music events from late week to Sunday. It’s also the place to go for the big sporting events. A relaxing bar during day and rockin’ at night.
The Kicking Donkey
You won’t find it hard to find “The KD” (Kicking Donkey). It’s the one with the big donkey stuck to the wall outside! This is another music and sports bar, it is actually two bars. George’s Bar is a favourite of locals looking to catch up on the news, play pool and watch the football. The KD is a lively music venue at night.
Ask us in TurfnSurf if there is anything going on in the Aparthotel. During summer months they have bands play and there have been many lively nights had there. A friendly and welcoming bar.
There are three nightclubs in Bundoran; Paris nightclub on the Main Street, Jumpin Jacks located in the basement of the Holyrood Hotel and Boom Boom nightclub located on Astoria Road.
